ONS Connect - February 2008 - (Page 19) CapiTOlCONNECTiON IOL and APN Attendees Tell Congress to Enact Tobacco Legislation [By Ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP, ONS Health Policy Associate] t the Institutes of Learning (IOL) and Advanced Practice Nursing (APN) Conference held in November 2007, nearly 1,000 attendees took ac tion to help enact legislation that would grant the U.S. Food and Drug Admin istration the authority to regulate all tobacco products. Advocacy postcards addressed to senators and representatives asserting that “Tobacco causes one in three can cer deaths; you can change this” were distributed at plenary and breakout ses sions. The cards had a preprinted mes sage asking elected officials to “Please support the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2007.” At tendees could fill out a few lines with their names and contact information, and space was provided if they wished to include a personal message regarding A the need for tobacco control. The cards were sent to the ONS health policy asso ciates in Washington, DC, so they could be hand delivered to Capitol Hill. ONS has joined with hundreds of na tional, state, and local organizations in calling on Congress to enact the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Con trol Act (S 625/HR 1108). As part of this effort, ONS is working with the Partners for Effective Tobacco Policy coalition to increase the number of elected officials who are cosponsors of the legislation. The more cosponsors a legislative pro posal has, the greater the likelihood that it will see legislative action. In addition to the advocacy cards, meeting attendees were given the oppor tunity to sign up for ONStat—the ONS electronic grassroots advocacy network. Currently, thousands of ONS members Ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP participate in ONStat by responding to occasional calls to action to contact Congress in support of the ONS Health Policy Agenda.
