Decker, MS, RN, CS-ANP, AOCN® n this, my last column as president of ONS, I want to share a few final thoughts with you. The past two years have been life altering for me. I have had the opportunity and privilege to meet some of you, attend chapter meetings, make visits to legislators on behalf of oncology nursing and quality cancer care, meet with other nursing and cancer care organizations, and live our vision, mission, and core values every day. I have learned much from conversations with you, and I thank you for your honesty, creative ideas, and commitment to our I have learned much from conversations with you, and I thank you for your honesty, creative ideas, and committment to our profession. profession. Your comments are helpful in the Society’s decision-making process. When making decisions, the ONS Board of Directors, as well as the boards of directors of the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation, ONS Foundation, and ONSEdge, consider a variety of resources as we seek to meet the current and future needs of our members. We incorporate the information provided by internal documents such as our Strategic Plan, Environmental Scan, Education Agenda, and membership surveys— as well as feedback from conversations with members, including discussions at our annual Congress town hall meetings. We also monitor and consider external trends such as changes in the U.S. and nursing populations (e.g., the number of people older than 60 is increasing whereas the number of nurses is decreasing) and a national presidential election that will impact our healthcare system. Because of a suggestion from Ellen Carr, RN, MSN, AOCN ®, during the town hall meeting at the 2007 ONS Congress in Las Vegas, NV, we will provide information at the ONS Congress in Philadelphia, PA, this year regarding each presidential candidate and their responses to specific questions. ONS celebrates and supports individuals’ diversity of thought. We also need to consider another diversity—the diversity of skills required by the different volunteer positions, including the four boards of directors. Consider the possibilities. There are many ways to volunteer based on your interest areas and time commitments. As oncology nurses, we have a vested interest to take responsibility for our specialty. I look forward to seeing your name on an advisory panel or team or ballot in the very near future.
