Oncology nurses may be at particularly high risk because of issues such as role conflict, role overload, no-win situations, moral distress, futility of care, spiritual distress, and chronic bereavement. The session will be held on Friday, May 16, from 2:30–4 pm. A recording of the session will be available for purchase at www.ons.org/ ceCentral/conferences/past.shtml after the conference. Janie Jessee Platt, RN, BSN, OCN®, says that her institution uses a leadership development program to increase staff satisfaction. holiday, free of charge to anyone working that day. Other programs include a home ownership assistance plan, 10 $1,000 college scholarships per year to children of employees, an adoption assistance program, a daycare with licensed kindergarten, and an on-site childcare service for mildly ill children called Cuddle Care. “When your children don’t feel well, it’s great to be able to bring them to work, know they’re comfortable and in great hands, and be able to check on them throughout the day—it’s right across the street,” Gehkre says. Leadership Development Although having the details of life under control makes a big difference, many nurses also want to feel appreciated and valued for the contributions they make in their professional lives. ONS member Janie Jessee Platt, RN, BSN, OCN®, bone marrow transplant program operations nurse manager at Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, KY, describes a leadership development “It is a huge benefit to be able to come to work and concentrate—and not have to think constantly of all of those things you still have to get done at home.” 10 ONS CONNECT APRIL 2008 http://www.ons.org/ceCentral/conferences/past.shtml http://www.ons.org/ceCentral/conferences/past.shtml
