ONS Connect - April 2008 - (Page 12) Gehrke says that her institution’s concierge service is the “best thing ever.” education program and payment for ONS membership, certification examinations, conferences, and participation in the ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy Provider Course. “Annually, we have a luncheon during Oncology Nursing Month to recognize all oncology nurses, and we make sure to provide an equally nice celebration for our night shift, which is great for them not to be forced to come in during the day to participate. “This year we were also able to take the outpatient nursing staff to the Kentucky Derby for ‘Breakfast at the Downs,’ which gave everyone the chance to see the Derby from behind the scenes,” Platt says. She believes that “the difference that these types of investments have made can be seen in the longevity of the employees. The oncology departments have staff members who have been in the program for 10, 15, or more years. 12 ONS CONNECT “It takes a lot of time to do all of this, but to hear a great employee say ‘You actually took the time to send a note to my house!’ . . . makes it worthwhile.
