ONS Connect - April 2008 - (Page 14) YOUTELLUS What Support Does Your Institution Offer to Promote Work-Life Balance? Offer Perks Such as Telecommuting ne thing that Emory Healthcare has been doing for the past year is permitting the nursing leadership and clinical nurse specialists to telecommute (work from home) once a month. This has been a big source of satisfaction for the nursing leaders. This change was spearheaded by our new chief nursing officer, Susan Grant. O generates the most revenue—the chemotherapy infusion suite. We stay the long hours, no lunches, etc. You’d think that someone would notice. Our patients bring us lunches because they feel bad for us. Isn’t that something: Our patients are the ones we need to care for, and they are caring for us. They are wonderful! Wendy Green, RN Charleston, SC Oncology Staff Come Together for Annual Retreat cean Medical Center holds an oncology staff retreat each December at an off-site retreat house. Our nurse manager and oncology clinical nurse specialist are instrumental in developing the program and recognizing the need for caring and supporting oncology staff. It involves personal interactions, fun, laughter, and, at times, tears of joy. Mary Gullatte, RN Emory Crawford Long Hospital Atlanta, GA Patients Recognize Nurses’ hard work nfortunately, our private office doesn’t recognize the need for work-life balance. It’s funny sometimes (most of the time) how hard the nurses work and how much of an asset they are that gets overlooked. From the business standpoint, we are the department that O U Each retreat begins with an art activity and includes lunch and an enriching lecture. Staff members have the opportunity to discuss their artwork, which helps us to learn and appreciate the uniqueness of our peers. The retreat includes a slide show of memorable staff moments throughout the year, intertwined with powerful quotations to uplift and reenergize our spirits. During the closing, we write about and share the positive attributes of our peers. The program is concluded in silence with a candle-lighting ceremony. This annual personal experience of togetherness helps us to remember to care for ourselves and to believe that in each of us lies the power to make a difference in others’ lives. Marlene B.
