ONS Connect - April 2008 - (Page 26) ONS Seeks Candidates for 2009 Election [By rose ermete, RN, BSN, OCN ®, CCRP, ONS Nominating Committee Member] his fall, the Nominating Committee will slate candidates for five ONS positions: president-elect, treasurer, two directors-at-large, and one Nominating Committee member. Individuals elected to these positions will take an active role in setting the course for the future of our profession. President-Elect • Performs the duties of the president in his or her absence and other duties as determined by the president or Board of Directors • Assumes the role of president at the end of a one-year president-elect term or immediately in the event of a vacancy in the office of the president • Participates in four face-to-face meetings and seven to eight conference calls per year • Time commitment: president-elect, approximately 100 days per year; T president, approximately 160–240 days per year; past president, approximately 20–25 days per year Treasurer • Serves as chair for the Board’s financial process • Manages ONS investments, along with the Board and other advisors, to attain targeted return at acceptable risk • Provides guidance to the Board and project teams regarding fiscal matters • Participates in four face-to-face meetings and seven to eight conference calls per year • Time commitment: approximately 60 days per year Director-at-Large • Acts as a voice for the Society, upholding and articulating ONS’s vision, mission, and values • Actively participates in strategic planning and priority setting • Participates in four face-to-face meetings and seven to eight conference calls per year • Time commitment: approximately 45– 50 days per year Nominating Committee • Assess ONS’s leadership needs • Promotes visionary thinking, cultural competence, ethical decision making, and confidentiality • Establishes a qualified slate of candidates and oversees the election process • Time commitment: approximately 24 days per year For more information, including more detailed position descriptions and the 2009 Candidate Guide, visit www.ons .org/membership/election/candidate Materials.shtml. The 2008 recipient is Jeri Ashley, RN, MSN, AOCN®, AOCNS®, oncology clinical nurse specialist and director of research at Methodist University Hospital in Memphis, TN. This year’s recipient is Carol Estwing Ferrans, PhD, RN, FAAN, deputy director for the Center for Population Health and Health Disparities and professor in the College of Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lecture Saturday, May 17, 8:30–10 am This lectureship award recognizes a nurse for his or her work in the psychosocial aspects of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care.
