ONS Connect - April 2008 - (Page 29) STAYINgONTOP Resume Writing, Part 3: Complete Your Resume With Careful Editing and Professional Formatting [By elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] fter you’ve written the first draft of your resume (see Staying on Top in the March 2008 issue of ONS Connect), you can begin to format it professionally and revise it as needed. A First, ensure that the resume is not too long yet contains enough information to paint an accurate picture of your skills and experience. Resumes should be written in a persuasive tone. Because you are the resume subject, delete the pronoun “I” and instead begin sentences with action words (e.g., authored, spearheaded, coordinated). Use the present tense to describe responsibilities for the job you currently hold and past tense for any previous positions. Keep sentences concise, and avoid using acronyms. The design of your resume also is important. Use a 10- to 12-point font that is easy to read. Bulleted lists and flush- left text also add to legibility. Horizontal lines may help separate sections, but use them sparingly. Keep spacing and margins consistent, and ensure that some white space is incorporated. Finally, if you are e-mailing your resume, convert it to a PDF to prevent the text from reflowing. If you are sending a hard copy, be sure to print it on highquality paper and envelopes. A white-, off-white–, beige-, or gray-colored, 24pound paper is most common.
