ONS Connect - April 2008 - (Page 7) Scientists find genes That may Triple Bowel Cancer Risk possible genetic causes of lung and ovarian cancers. Jaeger, E., Webb, E., Howarth, K., Carvajal-Carmona, L., Rowan, A., Broderick, P., et al. (2007). Common genetic variants at the CRAC1 (HMPS) locus on chromosome 15q13.3 influence colorectal cancer risk. Nature Genetics, 40(1), 26–28. S cientists say they have found two genetic mutations that could triple the risk of developing bowel cancer. The researchers report identifying two mutations within the section of the human genome linked to bowel cancer that could raise the overall risk two to three times. The mutations could cause a third of all cases of bowel cancer, according to the report. The scientists hope a test may be developed in the future for a combination of mutations that could indicate a significantly increased risk of bowel cancer. The research is the latest in an effort by scientists to search the entire human genome for mutations linked to cancer. Plans are under way to investigate the Blood Test may Detect Early Breast Cancer blood test to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages could be made available in the United Kingdom next year, according it its manufacturer, DiaGenic ASA, a Norwegian biotechnology company. The test works by detecting abnormal patterns of gene activity that are not found in healthy tissue. Experts predict that, when used alongside a mammogram, it could be of particular A benefit to younger women, who have denser breasts in which mammograms may not be able to find changes. Early trials suggest that the test can detect 88% of breast cancers. However, more testing is still needed to prove that the test is reliable. The manufacturer said it hoped to receive approval for the test to be administered in Europe by late 2008. DiaGenic ASA. (2007). Opaldia to launch breast cancer blood test in 2008.
