As a recognized and established leader in cancer care, ONS is committed to fostering and developing oncology nurse leaders who will impact nursing practice today and in the future. The ONS Leadership Development Institute (LDI) was established in 1998 with a vision “to provide a comprehensive, multifaceted, self-supporting leadership development program that prepares future leaders for influential roles in the transformation of cancer care and the promotion of excellence in oncology nursing and that ensures continual leadership vitality for the ONS” (Stengel & Nevidjon, n.d., p. 4). The main goals of LDI are to prepare oncology nurses to lead the transformation of cancer care, promote oncology nursing leadership in all settings, and sustain and enhance the vitality of ONS (Stengel & Nevidjon). The ONS Foundation provides support for LDI through an unrestricted grant from GlaxoSmithKline. Since LDI was established, more than 400 nurses have participated and graduated from the program. Currently, 81% of those graduates hold national or local leadership positions. This experience has changed the lives of many nurses, and the impact has far-reaching outcomes that are evident in their stories. Taking the first Step Teresa A. Anders, RN, BSN, OCN®, staff development and health manager at the Medical Center of Newark in Ohio and LDI fellow from 2005–2006, says that she applied for LDI because, “at the time, the organization I was employed by had no clinical ladder system and I felt my career becoming stagnant.
