Anders provided ongoing drug safety training and developed standards for procedures that required handling of chemotherapy drugs. Her team approached the hospital’s vice president with the idea and met with the ethics committee. During a three-year period, they conducted a survey among staff and physicians regarding their opinions about how end-of-life care was delivered, collected data identifying the units that had the highest number of deaths, implemented the End-of-Life Nursing Education Consortium curriculum for staff, and brought together physicians to discuss methods for delivering bad news. In 2004, Sellers saw the palliative care team became a reality. “Even more exciting was that our hospital received the Circle of Life Award in 2005,” Sellers says. The national award honors innovation in palliative and end-of-life care. Anders’ project addressed safety issues. “My goals were to develop and implement a hazardous drug safety program through staff education and training using the ONS guidelines.” For her two-year project, Anders provided ongoing drug safety training, annual competency reviews, and medical surveillance for all staff members involved in the chemotherapy process. She developed standards for policies and procedures related to chemotherapy administration, disposal, and handling and addressed patient education to explain the purpose of gowns and gloves. “I also advocated for a patient library,” Anders says. “And with the assistance of the Education Committee, the library became a reality.” Included in the library’s holdings is a stan- Apply for LDI Now!
