CApiTOlCONNECTiON ONS Cohosts National Nursing Community Meeting [By ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP, ONS Health Policy Associate] I n January, ONS joined with the American Nephrology Nurses’ Association (ANNA), the American Organization of Nurse Executives, and the Association of Rehabilitation Nurses to host a meeting of more than 23 national nursing organizations to plan for fiscal year (FY) 2009 federal appropriations to support the nation’s nursing workforce and address the nursing shortage. The goal of the meeting was for the national nursing community to come to consensus around the total funding request to be made of the U.S. Congress for the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs for 2008. Three years ago, ONS convened the first meeting of this kind to help the nursing community present a consistent funding request and message to Congress. Members of Congress and their staff had expressed concern to ONS and others in the nursing community that the disparate funding amounts the community was advocating were causing confusion on Capitol Hill and giving opponents a reason not to support increased appropriations for Title VIII programs. The first meeting proved successful, and representatives of other national nursing organizations turned to ONS to host another meeting the following year. ONS worked with ANNA in bringing together the groups in 2007 to determine the community’s fund- ing request for FY 2008. At the January 2008 meeting, the nursing community decided it would seek Ilisa Halpern $200 milPaul, MPP lion in FY 2009 for Title VIII programs, the same amount that was requested for FY 2008.
