ONS Connect - May 2008 - (Page 30) STAYiNGONTOp Format Your Resume for Electronic Viewing [By Elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] ob searching has gone the way of shopping, networking, and even television watching: online. And even if you are not submitting a resume through a job-search Web site or via e-mail, recruiters may be scanning resumes to easily peruse them for key information. As a result, what may have worked in print for your resume may not be successful when it is viewed electronically. Keep some key ideas in mind when preparing your resume for the digital age. • When e-mailing your resume, include it in the body of an e-mail rather than as an attachment. Some e-mail firewalls do not accept attachments. Include a short cover letter directly before your resume. J • Include the word “resume” in the subject line of your e-mail. • Use simple fonts, such as Arial or Helvetica, in 11- or 12-point size, and left justify the document. • Make sure that your name appears at the top of every resume page. • Avoid using bullets or other graphics, because these can get lost in individual computer formatting. • Make sure that you use key words related to your work experience and/ or industry jargon, because recruiters may search for certain words rather than read through each entire resume. • Proofread your resume and run spell check before e-mailing it or posting it to a job-search Web site. Job-search Web sites such as Career Builder.com and Monster.com also offer templates for formatting your resume for their sites. ✱ Apply Now for ONS Lectureship Awards Mara Mogensen Flaherty Memorial Lectureship: supports an ONS Congress lecture on psychosocial aspects of cancer diagnosis, treatment, and care ONS Clinical Lectureship: supports an ONS Congress lecture for excellence in clinical nursing practice Trish Greene Memorial Quality-of-Life Lectureship: supports an ONS Institutes of Learning lecture that brings attention to QOL issues in cancer care; describes the contributions of oncology nurses to QOL in cancer care; applies QOL information to oncology nursing; and incorporates the philosophy of QOL into all aspects of cancer care The deadline to apply for these awards is August 15.
