ONS Connect - June 2008 - (Page 13) Programs for Minority Patients The American Cancer Society provides programs for several minority groups, offering cancer information and screening advice. • Let’s Talk About It (www.cancer .org/docroot/PED/content/PED_ 1_5X_Lets_Talk_About_It.asp) is a free, community-based program that helps increase awareness and knowledge of prostate cancer among African American men. • Tell a Friend (www.cancer.org/doc root/CRI/content/CRI_2_6X_ Tell_A_Friend_5.asp) offers programs for women in three racial/ ethnic groups—Asian American, Hispanic/Latino, and Alaskan Native and Native American—to encourage women to get breast cancer screening and Pap tests. The National Institutes of Health provides a program called Body and Soul (http://bodyandsoul.nih.gov/in dex.shtml), which was developed for African American churches. It encourages church members to eat a healthful diet rich in fruit and vegetables every day for better health. Mary Gullatte, PhD, RN, APRN, BC, AOCN®, FAAMA, provides awareness and risk education programs to African American and Latina women. Grant-Funded Programs The focus thus far for Erwin and Gullatte has been within the African American and Hispanic communities. Through a two-year grant from the Greater Atlanta affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Emory established a breast cancer education program. “Our Breast C.A.R.E. Partners (Cancer Awareness and Risk Education) program has provided breast health education to over 3,000 African American and Latina women, over 100 free mammograms, and follow-up for diagnostic clinical breast exams and procedures and has referred two women for treatment who were underinsured,” Gullatte says. Erwin’s department raised more than $630,000 in its first year to address cancer disparities. This enabled “our Witness Project to provide breast cancer awareness education to over 500 African American women in one year, and, in the first month of Esperanza y Vida, over 70 Latina women were educated,” Erwin says. “A grant from the John R. Oishei Foundation will allow us to study an intervention to improve breast and cervical screening among Latinas, and we are beginning to design prostate cancer awareness programs.” Kelly adds that “at RPCI, we also recognize that barriers exist for patients, not just at the point of screening but at the end of life as well. Therefore, we have obtained a grant for a legal team that works with individuals who may not have the ability to pay for a will or settling custody issues, for example.” June 2008 ONS CONNECT 13 http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_1_5X_Lets_Talk_About_It.asp http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_1_5X_Lets_Talk_About_It.asp http://www.cancer.org/docroot/PED/content/PED_1_5X_Lets_Talk_About_It.asp http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_6X_Tell_A_Friend_5.asp http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_6X_Tell_A_Friend_5.asp http://www.cancer.org/docroot/CRI/content/CRI_2_6X_Tell_A_Friend_5.asp http://bodyandsoul.nih.gov/index.shtml http://bodyandsoul.nih.gov/index.shtml
