ONS Connect - June 2008 - (Page 17) UPCLOSE&PROFESSIONAL Nurses Explain Why They Are Involved With ONS [By Camille A. servodidio, RN, MPH, CRNO, OCN®, CCRP, Contributing Editor] Beth Gouge, RN Lynne Rossier, RN ynne Rossier, RN, oncology staff RN for Cancer Care Associates in Royal Oak, MI, and Beth Gouge, RN, clinical nurse in oncology at Memorial Health System in Colorado Springs, CO, appreciate all that ONS has to offer them as oncology nurses. “I am grateful for the educational opportunities that ONS provides and I love the monthly publication,” Lynne says. “ONS Connect is a great way to keep in touch with other professionals and explore the issues we all face. I think the focus on education and the availability of the nurse contact hours is tremendous. I also appreciate the monthly clinical update publication. Clinical practice can change so rapidly, and it is a great way to stay on top of the latest developments.” Beth also appreciates the wealth of information that ONS promotes. “ONS provides me with a huge amount of reading material (via e-mail, online, and in print) on the most updated information regarding medications, treatments, and nurse contact hours. Sometimes it is all a bit overwhelming, but it is crucial for me as a nurse to stay informed. With the information I learn, I can provide proper patient care, which will help me succeed in nursing.” It is those professional contributions as well as the day-today relationship she builds with her patients that keep Beth in the profession. “I know I will help my patients throughout their stay in the hospital, and every day I learn something new.” Lynne says that she has been very focused on learning the chemotherapy protocols and preparing for the OCN® examination over the past year. “I have not dedicated much time directly to ONS but I do hope that in the future I can become more involved in my local chapter and with a special interest group. I received my ONS chemotherapy provider card this year and was thrilled with that milestone as a new nurse in oncology.” ✱ L Contributing Editor Camille A.
