ONS Connect - June 2008 - (Page 28) MEETTHEBOARD Brenda Nevidjon, MSN, RN, FAAN ONS President Clinical Professor and Chair, Master’s Program, Duke University School of Nursing Durham, NC Education: MSN in psychiatric nursing How I got into oncology nursing: I think oncology chose me. My closest aunt died from melanoma when I was in high school, in college I did an independent study with people who were terminally ill, and as a novice nurse, I cared for a teenager with leukemia. When I was asked to develop a new role for four medical units, I provided consultation for people with cancer. After that experience, I chose oncology positions for more than 20 years—in Switzerland and Canada as well as Seattle and North Carolina. My first ONS leadership role: I began on the review board for the Oncology Nursing Forum (ONF), which led to being an associate editor for ONF and then to editor of ONS News for 10 years. For fun, I enjoy: Going to arts and crafts fairs, especially street fairs If there is one task that I could avoid, it would be: Cleaning the house My motto is: Remember “frog on a log” (The saying has special meaning for my husband and me. It’s a long story.) ✱ Birthplace/hometown: Norwalk, CT, but I have lived in Durham, NC, longer Family: Husband, Ben Staples; son, Jay; and two dogs, two cats, and two mice ONS Introduces New Health Policy Manager NS has hired Leslie Greenberg, RN, MSN, OCN®, to serve as health policy manager.
