Luedecker says that the successful integration of BPOC into her institution was challenged by the high complexity of implementation. A new technology needs to be adopted carefully into practice. It requires a culture change and coordinated work processes from administration, support personnel, and actual users of the technology. Nursing staff’s trust and ease of use with the handheld devices were among the major challenges during the first few days of implementation of BPOC, Luedecker says. Some of the staff nurses needed support with the use of handheld devices, and the administration addressed that need by providing extra staff nurses dedicated to helping those having difficulty with the handheld device. “In the end, our institution fully implemented BPOC but still closely monitors handheld use compliance,” Luedecker says. Bar coding provides an electronic medication administration record that can be used at the point of care. Luedecker says that bar coding eliminates patient identification problems.
