ONS Connect - July 2008 - (Page 12) Mahon says that accurate pedigrees are an important aid for prevention and early detection. “The BPOC brought a lot of initial discomfort, as does any major change in the way we practice,” Luedecker says. After a few weeks of operation, most of the nurses had adjusted and were happy with the new technology. A patient survey revealed that most patients believed that the new technology improved safety and security, Luedecker adds. With any new technology, it is important to be familiar with it immediately and use it frequently, Mahon says. Prior to the availability of the BRCAPRO software, each family tree had to be drawn by hand, which was a time-consuming endeavor. Making changes or corrections was challenging. Mathematical calculations of risk could be made only from tables and did not always include all of the information because the calculations were very complex. “The ability to construct a pedigree and make accurate numerical risk assessments [with BRCAPRO] is extremely helpful in cancer prevention and early detection,” Mahon says. It enables patients to make educated decisions about genetic testing and prevention and detection measures. “Technology can really improve a patient’s life,” Mahon concludes. ✱ My Nursing Professor Is a . . . Robot? The Nursing Institute of West Central Ohio at Wright State University in Dayton is the first school of nursing to use a “remote presence robotic system,” also known as RP-7. This one-year pilot project is an innovative method attempting to address the increasing faculty shortage. The program aims to connect faculty in remote locations with students in the classroom. RP-7 weighs about 200 pounds and is five feet tall, with a video monitor and camera mounted at the top to allow interactivity between the professor and students. SpaceDaily.com. (2007).
