Programs Deliver Customized, Personalized Education and Care [One nurse’s PersPecTive] Donna Berry, PhD, RN, AOCN®, FAAN Donna Berry, PhD, RN, AOCN®, FAAN, is a professor, vice chair for research, and the Myrene C. After diagnosis, men can go online and answer a series of simple questions about themselves and their values. The computer system then delivers customized education based on what they indicated was important. For example, a 48-year-old African American man would see a video of an African American man talking with his physician, addressing topics the participant indicated were of interest. The vignettes encourage patients to see their questions as normal, and they also coach them on ways to broach a difficult topic, like potential impotence or incontinence. Another important intervention based on patient-centered technology is directed toward the clinical team—a touch screen–based, patient self-reported symptom and qualityof-life assessment tool. Patients complete the assessment at baseline and then again six weeks into treatment, allowing the clinical team to see changes in symptoms such as depression and peripheral neuropathy. The system generates a graphic color summary that is easy for clinicians to review quickly—they just need to look for the red blocks, which indicate troublesome areas. It is an effective screening tool to focus on what’s most important to patients, and clinicians report that it can help to break the ice, especially with psychosocial or sexuality concerns. That’s really the beauty of these technologies: They can enhance personalized care for a particular patient. ✱ July 2008 ONS CONNECT W 13
