ONS Connect - July 2008 - (Page 18) NOTiCENUrSiNGNOw Use New Technologies to Connect With Colleagues, Patients, and the Public [By Karen Hochberg, MS, ONS Director of Marketing and Public Relations] N ew technologies, many of which are focused on networking, are quickly spreading across the Internet. ONS staff and volunteer leaders, working to make ONS the place where oncology nurses connect, are exploring the use of some of these new online tools. These Internet applications not only allow you to connect with colleagues across the country and around the world but also will be important to raising the profile of oncology nursing. The next time you are online, use Google® to search for oncology nursing. ONS is consistently at the top of the search results screen, which is right where it should be. Nurses and the general public alike, looking for information on oncology nursing, will be able to easily access the wealth of information on the ONS Web site. ONS volunteers and staff work hard to connect you to the best possible educational and professional networking opportunities, and those connections are often virtual instead of face to face. Becoming Internet savvy is an increasingly important skill that will enable you to access new knowledge and advance in your career. Many cancer support and advocacy partners are beginning to use these new social media tools to communicate with patients with cancer. Begin to notice how many of your patients are talking about reading the blogs of others facing treatment or describing the challenges of being a cancer survivor. Patients are using new media tools to share their experiences in creative, moving, and powerful ways via the Internet. ONS is beginning to explore how to best use these new media tools to connect our members and call attention to nursing. So when ONS launches its first blog or posts a video on a site such as YouTube®, join in on the conversation. Create a video or post comments on how ONS can continue to increase its online presence. ✱ ONS 10th National Conference on Cancer Nursing Research: Building a Strong Foundation . . .
