However, in the same way that it attacks cancer cells, it also can harm healthy cells—not only in patients receiving the drugs but also in anyone exposed to the drugs, including healthcare practitioners. Although the use of chemotherapy began in the late 1940s, the safety of preparing the agents was not addressed until the mid-1980s (Brown et al., 2005). In 1986, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration published guidelines to minimize healthcare workers’ potential exposure to hazardous cytotoxic agents. Since then, several organizations have addressed and made recommendations for the safe handling of chemotherapeutic drugs, including the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and ONS.
