ONS Connect - August 2008 - (Page 21) CAPITOLCONNECTION Coalition Participation Allows ONS to Influence Numerous Public Policy Issues [By ilisa Halpern Paul, MPP, ONS Health Policy Associate] o strengthen its impact in the health policy arena and leverage resources, ONS participates in numerous coalitions. Through these partnerships, the Society influences myriad health policy issues, infuses the nursing perspective into a wide range of public policy discussions, and works collaboratively with other organizations on T issues of mutual interest and priority. ONS maintains formal and informal liaisons with dozens of organizations and entities, including • Americans for Nursing Shortage Relief: national nursing organizations working together to address the national nursing shortage • Cancer Quality Alliance: a diverse Congressman Recognizes Nursing’s Contribution During Cancer Center Tour U.S. Representative Dennis Moore (D-KS) was invited to tour the new cancer center at the University of Kansas Hospital and learn about the operations and issues in cancer care. The tour was arranged to mimic a patient visit, including visits to registration, the lab, and physicians, and continued to other areas included in patients’ treatment plans, such as radiology, procedure room, and consultations with dietary or social work. All of these areas reside at the new Marcia Bailey, RN, Cathy Glennon, RN, 55,000-square-foot outpatient and U.S. Representative Dennis Moore facility. Among the issues discussed with the congressman by ONS members Marcia Bailey, RN, treatment room nurse manager, and Cathy Glennon, RN, director of nursing, was access to care, including insurance coverage concerns and the nursing shortage. Multiple nursing roles were pointed out that are key to cancer care, such as breast patient navigator, patient educator, and clinical trials nurse. Glennon discussed the critical need for nurses in this specialty area now and for the future and urged Congressional support. Because Moore’s wife is an RN, he was familiar with nursing and nursing issues and was very complimentary of contributions made by oncology nurses. group of public, private, and nonprofit organizations interested— and involved— Ilisa Halpern in improving Paul, MPP the quality of cancer care • Coalition for Patients’ Rights: a multidisciplinary group of health professional organizations that monitors and seeks to defeat organized medicine’s efforts to limit scope of practice for nonphysician providers • Global Access Project: a neutral research entity, with 42 stakeholder groups, whose mission is to complete independent research projects regarding reimbursement and access to quality care, including clinical trials • Health Professions Nursing Education Coalition: organizations representing schools, programs, health professionals, and students dedicated to ensuring that the healthcare workforce meets the needs of our diverse population • National Coalition for Cancer Research: cancer research, health professional, and advocacy organizations working together to advance cancer research (e.g., increasing federal funding for cancer research) • Partners for Effective Tobacco Policy: national health professional, advocacy, and other organizations committed to reducing and preventing the death and disability caused by tobacco use.
