ONS Connect - August 2008 - (Page 30) STAYINGONTOP Brush Up on Your Interview Etiquette [By elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] S ome hiring managers believe that business and interview etiquette has gone by the wayside. Today, some candidates are taking a far too relaxed approach to interviewing, showing up in attire that’s too casual and forgetting their manners (e.g., answering cell phone calls during an interview). Set yourself apart from these candidates and create a positive impression during interviews by going back to the basics of interview etiquette. • Show you are interested in the organization and position by doing your homework before the interview. Not only will you know about the organization, but you will also know how formal to dress and what to highlight on your resume. • Speaking of dress, always wear professional clothing, but within this, formality can vary. For companies with casual or no dress codes, often just a collared shirt and dress pants will make you look professional. If the company has a more formal dress code, you may need to wear a suit. • Be respectful of your interviewer’s time. Arrive to the appointment a few minutes early, turn off your cell phone during the interview, and respond promptly to any follow-up phone calls or e-mails from the interviewer. • Send a thank-you note after the interview. Few people remember to do this polite and respectful gesture, so sending a note will help set you apart. It’s also an opportunity to reiterate your strengths and point out anything you forgot to mention during the interview. ✱ Get Connected to Education, Information, and More at the ONS Institutes of Learning G et ready to head to Seattle, WA, November 14–16, for the ONS 9th Annual Institutes of Learning (IOL).
