ONS Connect - September 2008 - (Page 26) Seattle to Host ONS’s Ninth Annual Institutes of Learning [By Karyl Blaseg, MSN, OCN ®, BC, 2008 Institutes of Learning Planning Team Chair] O NS’s Ninth Annual Institutes of Learning (IOL) will be held November 14–16 in Seattle, WA. IOL provides oncology nurses with 11.5 hours of tailored educational experiences, as well as numerous networking opportunities, to promote excellence in oncology nursing and quality cancer care. This year, the topic submission process for IOL evolved. Instead of a general call for abstracts, the planning team reviewed past conference evaluations, the ONS Strategic Plan, the ONS Environmental Scan, the ONS Education Agenda, and other needs assessment data to identify a conference platform, which was then solicited to the ONS membership. General themes to be addressed at IOL include the latest advances in evidence-based disease and symptom management, evolving supportive and rehabilitative care strategies, and mechanisms to enhance oncology nurse retention. The keynote speaker will be Meg Brown, an author and cancer survivor who shares how she overcame a life-and-death battle with cancer—turning devastation and adversity into an uplifting, life-transforming experience with dignity and grace. Open sessions, offered Friday and Sunday, have something for everyone, with topics covering brain tumors and brain metastasis, neuroendocrine tumors, coagulation disorders, cardiotoxicities and cardiac conditions, pain management, safe handling, oral chemotherapy, vascular access devices, sexuality, palliative care, compassion fatigue, and negotiating for a healthy environment. Saturday’s miniinstitutes will provide in-depth exploration of topics such as lab parameters, the oncology pipeline, cancer immunology, B-cell malignancies, stem cell transplantation complications, breast reconstruction, brachytherapies, cancer rehabilitation, and survivorship care. An orientation session offers first-time attendees useful tips on how to get the most out of their IOL experience, and an online itinerary builder is available for generating a customized schedule. All sessions are identified according to topic track (clinical practice, education, administration, research, general) and level (introductory, intermediate, advanced). We will continue to use the online ONS Evaluation Center for conference evaluation. This process allows you to begin a transcript, print/reprint your continuing nursing education certificate, and access additional continuing education opportunities. All educational sessions will be professionally recorded and available for sale at IOL. Details will be posted at www.ons.org as they become available. For more information about IOL or to register, visit www.ons.org. I hope to see you in Seattle! ✱ Would You Like to Help Plan a National ONS Conference? Do you have strong organizational skills?
