ONS Connect - September 2008 - (Page 30) mEETThEbOarD Virginia (Ginny) Martin, RN, MSN, AOCN® Director-at-Large, ONS Board of Directors Clinical Director, Ambulatory Care, Fox Chase Cancer Center Philadelphia, PA worked at Fox Chase Cancer Center and told me to apply; she said at Fox Chase you can really deliver the level of patient care we were taught to give in school. I did, she was right, and I am still there 30 years as of March. My best and worst job I ever had: I was in high school and found a summer job in a factory that made records. I worked 4 pm to midnight, stood on my feet, used machinery that placed the labels on, pressed the plastic records from hot vinyl, and cut the holes in the middle. I met the most wonderful people and enjoyed the work and the money, but most important was the Motown music blasted on loudspeakers all shift from the records we were making. It was a tough job—I have scars from burns on my fingers that stay with me today—but I was able to move my feet to the music all night long! My fondest memory: My family means everything to me, and all of my precious memories are with them. When my son Peter was born in 1979, my mom and dad started a tradition—yearly summer vacation at the beach with my brother and his family, my sister and her family, my mom and dad, and my family. We started in Ocean City, NJ, and ended up in Corolla, NC. We did it every year for 23 years. The memories we made together were incredible and unforgettable; those trips created so many loving relationships and memories for our children. ✱ Hometown: Wyncote, PA Years in oncology nursing: 30 How I got in to oncology nursing: My first jobs in nursing were in an academic university system in medical-surgical, a community hospital in critical care, and then a home health agency. In all three positions I was drawn to patients with cancer, and my relationships with these patients had made a significant impression on me. I had a good friend who Nurse in Washington Internship Grants Available The 2009 Nurse in Washington Internship (NIWI) program will be held March 29–31 at the Liaison Capitol Hill in Washington, DC.
