ONS Connect - October 2008 - (Page 11) Gayle Jameson, MSN, ACNP-BC, AOCN®, is working on a study that uses molecular profiling to directly target patients’ tumors. Don’t worry—you probably won’t be faced with this scenario at work tomorrow, but it won’t be long before the results of genomic discoveries begin to appear regularly in oncology and other medical specialties. Since the completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 (Human Genome Management Information System, 2008), research has rapidly accelerated into how to interpret and apply information formerly hidden inside each cell. Some potential uses of genomic information include selecting the most effective cancer therapies, identifying patients who may be at risk for increased toxicity with a particular drug, and illustrating more subtle patterns of genetic variation (called single nucleotide polymorphisms, or SNPs) that may indicate risk for future diseases. Genomics and Cancer Genomics refers to the study of all of the genetic material within an organism (National Cancer Institute Office of Cancer Genomics, n.d.). This may be looking at a patient’s normal tissue, where information might be found indicating predispositions to noncancerous diseases such as cardiac problems or diabetes, or it might focus on identifying unique combinations of mutations contained within a tumor cell nucleus. By matching those unique combinations of mutations with the cytotoxic drugs that may be most effective against them, truly personalized therapies may become available. OctOber 2008 ONS CONNECT 11
