ONS Connect - October 2008 - (Page 38) STaYiNGONTOp Network With Others to Assist You in Your Career [By elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] N etworking can be an important part of advancing your career. A network is a group of people with whom you maintain relationships who may one day help you in your professional life. Such relationships are based on mutual interests, quite often related to your profession. Although developing a network may seem intimidating, you probably already have a good foundation. Past and present colleagues, managers, vendors, chapter members, and pharmaceutical representatives may be helpful one day in the future. And although a network isn’t necessarily a list of friends more than it is a list of professional contacts, don’t exclude personal contacts such as friends and relatives, religious and civic leaders, academic acquaintances, and significant others. Just remember that a large network is hard to maintain, so choose quality over quantity. Keep in touch with your contacts regularly through phone calls or e-mail. The easiest way to keep track of your network and ensure that you leave the lines of communication open is through a database or spreadsheet. Free online programs such as Linked In (www.linkedin .com) also may be helpful.
