ONS Connect - November 2008 - (Page 23) CArEGIvErCArE Use Your Nursing Skills Outside of Work [By tracy skripac, RN, MSN, AOCN ®, CHPN, ONS Education Team Project Manager] hat comes to mind when you think of nursing skills? Keen observation and assessment? Physical, mental, and emotional stamina? Critical thinking, prioritizing, and decision making? Care planning and implementation? Advocacy efforts? Assimilation and evaluation of data and outcomes? Teamwork, leadership, and collaboration? Interpersonal communication? Cultural and spiritual sensitivity? Flexibility? Technical competency? Conflict management? The myriad skills we acquire and use in our daily work are tremendous. Nurses skillfully combine the art of caring with the science of health care. Creativity is essential. We often use nursing skills and knowledge outside of work within our circle of friends and family who may be experiencing health issues. However, we can share our skills and knowledge W in many other ways that can be personally and professionally rewarding. • Volunteer at school, church, and community health fairs and screenings. • Assist others in navigating the healthcare system. • Advocate for health policy and reform efforts. • Assess the health and learning needs of individuals and groups. • Plan local chapter and other regional nursing organization activities. • Apply for an ONS project team. • Write clinical articles for ONS national or chapter newsletters or health-related articles for community publications. • Present community health or professional education programs. • Become a subject matter expert for a Web-based discussion forum. • Review ideas and projects of others and offer ideas for improvement. These are just a few examples of how to apply the cognitive, technical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills gained in your nursing career to other areas of your life. Be innovative— flaunt your skills and share your experience. ✱ for an ONS Honorary Membership Nominate a Colleague ONS is accepting nominations for honorary memberships, which honor individuals (members and nonmembers) who have made significant contributions to oncology nursing, demonstrated a sustained interest in and support of ONS at the national level, and exhibited conduct consistent with the Society’s organizational values.
