ONS Connect - November 2008 - (Page 30) ONS 2009 ELECTION by collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to produce clinical guidelines, access to clinical trials and standing orders for a new inpatient hospice program. My leadership qualities have extended beyond the walls of my institution by creating new community outreach programs. I have been instrumental in designing and implementing innovative initiatives during my tenure as Chapter President of the Southern Jersey Shore Chapter. I have contributed to oncology nursing knowledge through professional involvement, presentations, and publications at the local, regional, and national level. A personal goal for me is to emulate this type of leadership at the national level utilizing my knowledge and skills as an Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist. A step in that direction is seeking the position of ONS Director at Large. This position would allow me the op- portunity to lend my penchant for detail, clinical expertise, organization skills, creativity, passion and enthusiasm to implementing the mission and moving forward the vision of the Oncology Nursing Society. Patricia Poirier, PhD, RN, AOCN® During my more than 20 years in oncology nursing, I have had privilege of mentoring nurses and nursing students in their clinical, professional, and community development. While I was manager of radiation oncology we achieved a 100% oncology certification rate. The staff took an active role in American Cancer Society activities such as Relay for Life. An annual National Cancer Survivors’ Day Celebration evolved to over 2000 patient and family participants. Now I provide classroom and clinical education to undergraduate and graduate nursing students. Although we do not have an oncology specialty, I incorporate many of the skills I gained through ONS into the curriculum: evidencebased practice, end-of-life care, genetics, and health policy. I use examples from my oncology practice to illustrate patient assessment and care. I have assumed leadership roles within the faculty of the School of Nursing, serving on the search committee for a new director and being elected to the newly formed Policy Advisory Committee. As a director-at-large I would be uniquely qualified to bring the perspectives of both experienced and new oncology nurses to the discussions as the Oncology Society moves forward in promoting high quality cancer care and nurturing those who provide that care. Chapter leadership activities including board participation as a member of the nominating committee, a director at large, and the chapter president for two separate terms have shaped my leadership skills. My educational background as an oncology clinical nurse specialist and as a doctoral student in a DNP program focused on nursing leadership has provided me with a broad knowledge base related to global issues in the oncology and the nursing community. Perhaps most importantly, I have worked extensively with oncology nurses in a variety of roles including staff nurse, staff development instructor, nurse manager, and director of oncology disease management. In my former role as ONS Director of Education, I had the privilege of working with ONS members and staff on a number of education projects including national conference planning teams, online course development, and industry and federally supported grants. In my current role as director of organizational development, nursing education and research for a large academic medical center, I am personally involved in the daily issues that face nurses today. I will use these experiences to participate in discussions and decisions that will shape the future of ONS through project teams and board activities. Nominating Committee Joseph D. Tariman, RN, MN, ARNP, BC, OCN® I am running for an office to join the cadre of ONS leaders with fervent commitment to advance ONS’ agenda. ONS is one of the most influential or- ONS CONNECT
