ONS Connect - November 2008 - (Page 31) ONS 2009 ELECTION ganizations leading the transformation of cancer care in the US and the world. I am proud of my numerous involvements with ONS programs and initiatives. My first involvement with ONS was with a project team dealing with performance improvement in myelosuppression management. Since then, I have continued my volunteer efforts to the Society as one of the contributing editors for ONS Connect. I have also served as a member of CJON and ONF review boards. Prior to my pre-doctoral fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle, I served as Director-at-Large for the Chicago ONS chapter. I enjoyed working with chapter board members with diverse racial backgrounds and have learned to honor similarities and differences. Outside of my professional life, I have facilitated patient support groups and have been actively involved in patient advocacy groups as a member of their nursing advisory boards. Through my volunteer work at ONS and personal life experiences, I strive to reflect my commitment to ONS’ core values of integrity, excellence, advocacy, stewardship and inclusiveness. Rachel E. Behrendt, MSN, RN, APN-C, AOCNS® I believe in facilitating change through creating a shared vision. The leadership skills that have best enabled me to enact change are commitment and motivation. For example, I served for two years as Chapter President for the North Central New Jersey chapter. While president, our chapter realized several crucial goals including: growth in membership, community outreach, and public and professional educational initiatives. The chapter held an “Oncology Fall Forum,” attended by 500 nurses. Attendees were able to learn about ONS membership, leadership opportunities and new advances within oncology. Financially, the event raised over $10,000 for the chapter! This money has been reinvested to improve cancer care: funding educational scholarships for chapter members and supporting our chapter’s outreach efforts to educationally disadvantaged oncology nurses in Zambia. I believe that as chapter president, sharing my vision of what our chapter could become and having the commitment to achieve that vision were crucial to our success. ONS’s mission to promote excellence and transform cancer care are both goals that I have worked towards, professionally at my hospital as the oncology clinical nurse specialist and as a local ONS leader; I would be honored to have the opportunity to do the same as a member of the Nominating Committee. Nancy Houlihan, RN, MA, AOCN® I believe that my strength is bringing people together around a common cause. My experience working in various leadership roles at a large, complex cancer center, my involvement on the board of the NYC chapter and my participation in many educational endeavors at the national ONS level have provided me with an understanding of the needs of oncology nurses and our membership. As a nominating committee member, I believe I have the ability to engage potential leaders in furthering the goals of ONS, to reach out to members of diverse nursing groups, and to excite the next generation of oncology nurses to continue the legacy of excellence in cancer care. The future of the organization is in its members; the leadership of the organization is our responsibility. I am committed to assuring that ONS leaders continue to further the significance of oncology nursing to the provision of cancer care around the world. Chapters Rewarded When Members Vote Each year, three ONS chapters win $1,000 each for having the highest voting percentage in their size category. In the 2008 ONS election, the Missouri Valley (ND) Chapter (small), Philadelphia Area Chapter (medium), and Metro Minnesota Chapter (large) won the cash prize for having the highest voting percentage in their size category. How can your chapter encourage voting in the ONS election? • Discuss the ONS election at chapter meetings. Remind members that they can vote online or by paper ballot. • Place information about the election on your virtual community. • Publish articles about the election in your chapter’s newsletter. • Remind members of the ONS voting awards.
