ONS Connect - November 2008 - (Page 34) STAYINGONTOP References Are Available on Request [By Elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] ost potential employers require candidates to provide them with a short list of references for them to call who can attest to the candidates’ personal and professional qualities. How do you select colleagues or acquaintances who will portray you in the best light? Two professional references (e.g., former colleagues, supervisors or managers, teachers) and two personal references of no relation to you (e.g., clergy, community leaders, people of respected standing) are good numbers to strive for. Once you have selected people with whom you have had positive relationships in the past, ask them if they would like to be references during your job search. Give M them copies of your resume, and keep them updated on your job interviews so they know when to expect a call. For each reference, include the following information. • Full proper name • The person’s preferred address and daytime phone number • The person’s job title • The number of years you have known each other Today’s employers often use a reference-checking company to call candidates’ references to ensure that information is handled legally and ethically. The companies ask questions that can be answered with facts rather than opinions, a method that protects all parties involved.
