ONS Connect - December 2008 - (Page 32) Your Vote Makes a Difference in the ONS Election [By elizabeth Johnson, MSN, RN, AOCN ®, AOCNS ®, ONS Nominating Committee Members] s we approach 2009 having completed a milestone U.S. election, ONS members will be heading into another very important election to choose new leadership for the Society. Elections provide an opportunity for members to influence the future direction of the Society and to ensure continuity of our work through thoughtful succession. In an organization of more than 37,000 members, what can one vote do? • Show your commitment to the mission and vision of ONS. • Demonstrate your concern about the future of ONS and oncology nursing. • Recognize the talents, hard work, and commitment of the candidates. • Represent a very important person—a A knowledgeable, compassionate oncology nurse. With 16% of ONS members voting in the 2008 election, ONS voting patterns compare very favorably with other professional organizations. However, higher participation would strengthen our voice in the national discussion on health care, research, and resource utilization. The Nominating Committee is committed to helping you know the candidates and will implement the following strategies. • Provide position descriptions and podcast interviews with each candidate in the Elections area on the ONS Web site, as well as letters from the candidates on the Chapters Virtual Community. Audiodiscs of the interviews and paper copies of the letters also will be given to chapter leaders. • Encourage chapter leaders to plan a meeting with a focus on the elections, including a review of candidate information and voting procedures. Specific voting information will be distributed in January. All votes are confidential. Each member will receive a unique, single-use password for voting electronically. Completed electronic ballots are routed to an independent third party to ensure confidentiality. Alternatively, members can cast their votes by mail. Please vote! Your participation makes a critical contribution to maintaining a healthy organization dedicated to a profound mission. ✱ DiD you know SenD cancerandcareers.org for tips, tools & resoUrces: • free career coaching • info on insurance, legal rights • free workbooks and brochures • in english and spanish yoUr patients who work to CanCer? 32 ONS CONNECT there’s a website specifically geared to working people with The CanCer and Careers sPonsors: Founding: avon Foundation, roche PLaTinuM: L’oréal usa goLd: Bare escentuals, ChaneL, rPr Marketing Communications, seLF Magazine, shiseido Cosmetics america siLver: Bath & Body Works, Lindi skin, Macy’s Foundation, sephora usa, inc., suite K, Time inc.
