ONS Connect - December 2008 - (Page 33) STAYiNGONTOp Reshape Your Job to Prevent Burnout and Dissatisfaction [By elisa Becze, BA, ONS Staff Writer] S ometimes, making a job change isn’t possible. You may be unable to relocate, or perhaps the timing is off in your life or career. But if your current position leaves you feeling bored or dissatisfied, you don’t have to stay there and suffer. With a little bit of effort, you can reshape your job into the one you’ve been looking for. • Identify the parts of your job that leave you bored or unhappy and decide how they could be changed to bring you more satisfaction. • Approach your supervisor with your solution, fitting your message in with your boss’s personality type, and ex- plain how it will benefit your organization, your patients, and ultimately yourself. If you’ve tried that approach with no success, don’t worry; hope is not lost. You may need to reshape your outlook on the job rather than the position itself. • Keep a positive attitude. Instead of focusing on the things that bother you, remind yourself of the qualities of the job that you like. • Ask for more or new responsibilities to keep things fresh. New challenges and the opportunity to develop new skills can make you fall in love with a job all over again. • Make sure to balance work with life. Having a job that consumes you on and off the clock is a surefire path to burnout. Limit your overtime when possible, and make time for hobbies and spending time with loved ones. ✱ Vote in the 2009 ONS Election!
