IDEAS Everything is a process and nothing happens as quickly as you would like it to. What frustrates me? When people say "We can't do that." If we do not have a sustainable business, we cannot be a great community partner nor be a great place to work and shop. I realized right away I was not cut out for a long-term job in a suit at a desk all day. It gets harder to sit back and enjoy it all when you have older children and busy stores. I was not the class clown. Surround yourself with great people and share the workload. Developing future leaders is important. It benefits everyone. Earlier this year, a vendor shared an Albert Einstein quote with me: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them." Anything that we have done well over the years, we do consistently. Run Deep Innovation builds on tradition at this shop that understands how to build community. Name: Brian Jones Company: Playmakers Opened: 1981 Title: Co-owner Location: Okemos, Michigan Downlow: While still in college in 1987, Brian Jones organized a 5K race along with his fraternity and the local running store, Playmakers. After a brief stint in accounting, he ended up working at that shop. Three decades later, Jones is a co-owner, and Playmakers is a key member of the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance. The store has grown far beyond its pure running roots, carrying core outdoor brands like Arc'teryx and Keen and holding clinics and events that bond it with the local community. 38 OUTDOOR RETAILER / Summer 2016 We established the Playmakers Fitness Foundation in 2011 to organize and maintain all the community events and involvement that the store is known for. We work to empower people to adopt and sustain a healthier and more active lifestyle by providing opportunities for people to move more and educational programs that train people to move better. I am passionate about making a difference in the work we do and our community. That's pretty difficult to do in a larger organization. I really like the freedom you have as an entrepreneur. I like having the ability to say yes to things that make a difference. We have to continue to challenge the status quo. Recently, one of our many great associates serviced an elderly woman while she was in the driver's seat of her car, so that she would not have to come into the store. There is no perfect answer. O.R. Courtesy Brian Jones THOUGHT LEADERS I loved reading Yvon Chouinard's book Let my People go Surfing many years ago, and I think the whole "Live Simply" message is right on. But it's difficult to actually do with all the outside pressures placed on us.
