Outdoor Retailer - Summer 2016 - (Page 93)

How I Got Here: w/ Larry Harrison The Original Social Network The godfather of Outdoor Retailer explains how the outdoor industry is nothing if it's not a community and how we can keep growing the tribe. I CAME TO THE OUTDOORS IN THE 1960S AND 70s. I found climbing, hiking, and skiing-almost any outdoor pursuit really-an impediment to pursuing a real job. My career began with one contact with a special person, not unlike, I suspect, what happened with many of you. Steve Barker owned a store called The Mountain People in Idyllwild, California. I needed a pair of hiking boots. He sold me on the boots (Lowa Scouts, $39) and on the adventure that they promised. I have followed that adventure to this day, telling anyone that will listen that we do not sell things in our business. Things are not long remembered. Things do not create a constituency for wilderness. Things cannot keep someone coming back to you, your store, or your brand, time after time. Only the siren song of adventure can do that. My next tax refund became an investment in The Mountain People and the beginning of over four decades in what we today call the outdoor industry. Steve and Nona Barker went on to create Eagle Creek; I was their first salesperson. Since then I have run a I WON'T GO TOTAL KUMBAYA HERE, BUT I STRONGLY FEEL WE LIFT ONE ANOTHER TO SUCCESS. TO FULLY PARTICIPATE IN THE OUTDOOR INDUSTRY REQUIRES A STRONG NETWORK. Photograph courtesy Larry Harrison Summer 2016 / OUTDOOR RETAILER 93
