Run the Table

Take this step-by-step tour through your gift table display to draw
attention to, and sell, key products. by Robin Enright Salcido
THE HOLIDAY GIFT GIVING SEASON IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER, AND YOUR CUSTOMERS
are relying on you for ideas-something an online shopping experience does not provide. One of
the key ways to add a little magic and spur the purchase of just the right gift for a friend or family
member is to curate gift tables throughout your store. No matter the time of year, a successful table
will provide gift ideas and can help bridge the gap between your clothing and accessory departments. Gift tables also educate: They introduce your customers to ideas and help them see relationships between seemingly unrelated items. Place gift tables throughout your store, in your "hot
spots" or in real estate that generates the most attention and where your visitors tend to stop, such
as near cash wrap, in the front of the store, and by stair landings.
A little bit of planning can mean the difference between a lackluster presentation and an enticing table that is picked clean at the end of the day. Let's talk through the steps:
1. Determine your theme. The theme shown
in the Neptune Mountaineering image above
is "The Beginning Climber."
2. Select products that work well together
but that might not seem to the casual observer
to be obviously related.
3. Try to use no more than five categories so
as not to overwhelm the consumer.

4. Divide your table into thirds to simplify
your selection and display organization.
5. Determine color strategy and create
color triangles.
6. Use different price points to appeal to
everyone.
7. Vary heights to create separate planes

and to create visual interest. Here the display uses a rustic table, old chest, and oldschool sled behind the mannequins.

8. Gift tables should have multiple items so
that consumers feel free to take one... or two.
9. If you are including clothing, consider
positioning a two-way mirror nearby to
spur impulse purchases.
10. Don't forget to use props (greenery, related objects) to bring your display to life.
11. Change these tables out often-at least
every two weeks-to keep things fresh for
