rethinking retail means reimagining how an
independent shop can be a part of the community,
especially in light of the hurricanes that ravaged

WHEN BETSY BERTRAM'S PARENTS OPENED TOWNSEND BERTRAM
& Co. in 1988, there were no REIs near Carrboro, North Carolina,
or competition from online gear warehouses. Now, 30 years later
and in the wake of her father's passing, Bertram is writing her own
chapter of the family business narrative. Here's how Bertram is

helping TB&C transcend the brick-and-mortar retail space to become a genuine part of the community by supplying what that community needs when it's put to the test.
CATASTROPHE AID
In addition to overseeing TB&C's events and marketing, Bertram also
helps manage some rental properties. Last September, when Hurricane
Irma's landing in the Southeast was imminent, Bertram sent an email to
her tenants listing essential emergency supplies. As she reread the list,
she thought, "Why aren't we doing this at the store? As an outdoor adventure shop, part of our role is teaching people how to be safe, whether
that's when you're out in the wild or when nature brings the wild to your
door." The store posted a similar list at the front counter and also offered
a 10 percent discount for hurricane evacuees who had temporarily relocated to Carrboro. A month prior, when a chemical leak had caused
Carrboro residents to be without water for two days, TB&C stepped in as
the trusted resource for educating the public on proper water purification. (For more on retailers dealing with disaster, turn to page 18.)
