With a wide range of experience in the outdoor
industry, this independent rep sees doing the job
as a natural evolution of living the life.
RENAISSANCE MAN KRIS VERGSTEEGEN RAMBLED AROUND THE
outdoor industry as a journalist before moving into marketing. While
he succeeded in both fields-working as an editor at SportsOneSource
Group and a partner at Verde PR-he found his true calling eight years
ago when he became a rep. The abilty to make the career jump came
thanks to his friend and mentor Al Tunstall, a 30-year industry vet
and the founder of Venture Sports Group. "Al taught me the ropes and
really laid out a great template for territory management and retail
relationships I still use," says Versteegen. In April, he set out on his own,
launching Iron Mountain Sports Marketing, based in Virginia.
What's most fulfilling about life
as an independent rep?
I've stayed a rep due to the constant discovery. Every day with a
retailer presents a new opportunity, and I love to keep adapting
to the challenges. The best parts

Externally, we are still digging out of an economic hole and for the
outdoor industry, at least since November, the deck has been stacked
