the word on the street
Digital continues to make inroads with street furniture,
but success is more than just image delivery.

One thing that'll remain unchanged about street
furniture: It's still about creativity.

Ivan Zamarbide, the New York-based COO
North America for Spanish company CEMUSA, sees
two directions that digital technologies can take
street furniture. One has to do with the creative
treatment itself, and the other is to enable closer
communications with consumers.
The two, he says, have to work together.
Luc Beaulieu, Montréal-based vice president of real
estate Quebec and street furniture for Bell Media/
Astral in Out-of-Home, says his perspective is that
technology is making the least-flexible medium into
one of the most-flexible.
Beaulieu cites projects his company has done in
different Canadian markets as examples. As early as
two years ago, Bell Media/Astral introduced digital

When it comes to street furniture, it's always been
about the poster ... until now.
Graphic artists spent untold hours coming up
with simple and bright designs that not only caught
the eye of a rushing commuter, but also drew a
second look from the person waiting for a bus.
But, just as digital technology has put a different
spin on the traditional billboard, some of today's
street furniture - and certainly tomorrow's - will
find new ways to communicate with the traveling
(and waiting) public.
