The OPS Instructional League provides the opportunity to third through sixth graders to participate in league sports at no cost. Instructional League sports include cross country, soccer, basketball, volleyball, flag football, softball, baseball and tennis. Looking to future needs of its students, the district is in the midst of a $23 million construction project at Owensboro High School that will add state-of-the-art fine arts classrooms, a blackbox theatre, and an upgrade to existing performance areas. The addition will include a 2,500-seat gym and physical education facilities. Computer technology is an integral part of the curriculum with the Internet and instructional software used in grades K-12. This creates an environment where teachers and students become more proficient in using a wide variety of tools to enhance learning, problem solving, communication, collaboration, productivity and creativity. The district’s leadership reflects the quality of the school district. Superintendent Larry Vick was the “2008 Kentucky Superintendent of the Year.” Recently retired principal Walter Lee was the “2008 KASA Distinguished Administrator of the Year,” and Julie White, the district’s Fine and Performing Arts Coordinator, received the “2008 Governor’s Award for the Arts in Education.” School Board member Jane Haase serves on the Kentucky School Boards Association Board of Directors. Success for every student is the goal of the district. As a way to help monitor achievement, student growth in areas of math, reading and language usage is measured through the Measures of Academic Progress testing system so that individual student progress is routinely monitored. The district serves a diverse student population and works diligently to serve every child whether academically advanced or academically challenged. The District has approximately 4,300 students.
