Another way to separate assets is to distinguish
between liquid and non-liquid. As retirement
approaches, use discretion in "cashing in" your
assets. Liquid assets such as bank accounts, taxable
accounts or retirement accounts can be accessed at
any time, although some may be exposed to penalty taxes in certain circumstances. If your money
is tied up in alternative, non-liquid assets such as
real estate or other commodities, consider if you
need to generate income from these investments
and how you can begin doing so.
Just as the market is volatile, the regulations
that govern the tax and retirement structure are
ever-changing. Political shifts can significantly
impact tax brackets and, consequently, your income
in retirement. This reinforces the importance of
planning ahead and building your "buckets" to
create as much tax efficiency now as possible.
Planning is an investment like any other - it
takes resources up front, including time and
strategy, but the return is worth it: ownership
of your future, and a comfortable, rewarding
retirement.
