The ruins of forts built by the Spanish, French and British speak to the immense value of the virgin territory that would become Beaufort County. Even a stay at an historic inn can provide a captivating glimpse of local history (see p. 55). and landmarks of their own, the town’s ancient, mighty oaks draped with Spanish moss stand as silent witnesses to the watershed events that shaped contemporary Beaufort. panning more than three centuries, Beaufort’s history reads like a gripping novel. Conflict, prosperity, grandeur, turmoil, rebirth — these are the chapters in the story that make this place an enriching educational journey as well as a leisurely getaway. Recently celebrating its tricentennial (see p. 74), the City of Beaufort was first chartered in 1711. The town embraces, commemorates and preserves deep historical and cultural roots.
