More than 17,000 active-duty armed forces members live and work in the area. one of the most-visited military facilities in the world, Parris Island is home to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and the Parris Island Museum. every year, the Depot trains more than 15,000 Marine recruits (all the nation’s female recruits and all male recruits east of the Mississippi river). Guests are encouraged to attend recruit graduation ceremonies, held on several weekends throughout the year. experience the time-honored tradition for yourself — just bring your driver’s license, vehicle registration and proof of auto insurance for entrance. Visitors are also welcome to explore the Parris Island Museum, the Marine corps’ first command Museum. More than 10,000 b  square feet of exhibits honor the history and tradition of the Marine corps, and highlight island history from its Native american roots to the founding of the Depot. the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort boasts Marine and Naval f/a-18 squadrons that create the “sounds of freedom” often heard overhead. the fightertown family consists of more than 700 Marines and sailors plus 600 civilian employees. It’s an established auxiliary air station, and at any given time, half the squadrons are deployed around the globe. Just 10 miles down the road, on the site of the former Fort Frederick (built in 1734) and Camp Saxton (a civil War garrison), the Naval Hospital Beaufort encompasses 127 acres. the hospital provides general medical, surgical and emergency services to more than 35,000 beneficiaries. one of only a few military facilities recognized as a complete military compound, the hospital features 53 family housing units, two Bachelor enlisted
