The Naval Hospital also has two Branch Medical Clinics at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot and the Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. The historic tabby (seashell and mortar) ruins of Fort Frederick lie on Naval Hospital grounds. Guests can tour Naval Heritage Park, just outside the gate, where an historic marker designates the site of Camp Saxton and gives detail of Emancipation Day, which celebrated the enactment of the Emancipation Proclamation on New Year’s Day 1863. Near downtown Beaufort, pay your respects to those who have served this country at the Beaufort National Cemetery. Established in 1863 by President Lincoln and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the cemetery is the resting place for veterans, including more than 2,800 Union soldiers and 117 Confederate soldiers who gave their lives during the Civil War. See monuments honoring the Union Army, erected in the late 1800s. A memorial installed in 1997 is dedicated to the Confederate soldiers. They serve as reminders to honor all armed forces.
