PROMOTION SPIRIT OF FRANCHISE OPPORTUNITIES BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY Two Care-Based Franchises Focus on Kids, Seniors BY MELANIE JARRETT When was the last time you heard about an opportunity to help others while making money at the same time? In today’s profit-driven corporate culture, the answer could very well be “never.” But a new idea is emerging from organizations focused on the business of caregiving: Help others first, and money will follow. Kiran Yocom, chairwoman and co-founder of Seniors Helping Seniors, has helped pioneer the movement with her burgeoning in-home, non-medical care business. The premise is simple: meet the swelling demand for senior care with other seniors. Now with more than 200 franchises nationwide, the concept allows less active seniors to continue to live independently in their own homes by matching them with more active seniors who provide companionship and assistance in daily activities. “We have actually built our Seniors Helping Seniors commitment to first help, and then to make money into the very fabric of our franchise system,” says Yocom. “And as a result, we’ve created 114 SPIRIT APRIL 2013 an environment where all of our franchise partners are truly working together to help each other.” On the other end of the spectrum are franchises that focus on meeting the everincreasing need for child care. Founded in 1981, Kiddie Academy has expanded to franchise locations in 23 states based on their strong reputation for education-based daycare. “From the very beginning, we invested in the development of our proprietary Life Essentials curriculum and methodologies, which truly set us apart from the competition,” says Greg Helwig, Kiddie Academy’s president. “Every single one of our franchises has the core philosophy to help care for and develop every child.” Both companies are built on a common ingredient for startup success: meet a consistent population need with a quality product. What has set them apart, however, is their simultaneous focus on doing good through their work. “Seniors Helping Seniors began as a heartfelt mission to fill a need that was not being served by our local community,” says Yocom. “But we’re now being recognized as a prime business opportunity fueled by the fastest growing demographic in our society.”
