Spirit Magazine - April 2013 - (Page 18)

From the Editor GoinG Steady Don’t mock the tortoise— imitate it. Dear Reader, One of the coolest things you can do while flying 500 miles an hour is to learn how to slow down. In this issue, David Hochman tells how—and why—he and his family came up with the idea for “Slowvember,” a month dedicated to the art of slowness. Did the experiment work? Turn very slowly to page 72 to find out. But first, here’s a tip that I acquired years ago from one of my favorite historical figures, Daniel Webster. America’s greatest orator, serving as a senator and a powerful secretary of state before the Civil War, Webster was too busy to lead a fulltime slow life. Instead, he created daily hours of slowness by getting up early. When on his farm in Massachusetts he awoke at 3 a.m., did paperwork for five hours, and then knocked off at 8 to have breakfast and go fishing. Inspired by Webster, I’ve been getting up at the more reasonable hour of 4 a.m. No, I’m not a morning person. I just choose to live in my own personal time zone. 18 spirit APRIL 2013 Call it CST: Central Slow Time. It’s like Slowvember, only year-round. CST comprises a daily Period of Impenetrability—four early, at-my-own-pace hours in which no one calls or emails me. Mostly I use the time to exercise and get in a few hours of work. This allows me a less frantic pace for the rest of the day. I can play hooky occasionally, take naps, clock out early, and still accomplish more than I used to with standard and daylight-saving time. You might think of taking yourself to Central Slow Time. Yeah, it seems a little weird at first, but I don’t expect you to plunge into it. Want to spend a few months getting used to the idea? Go ahead. Take your time. —Jay Heinrichs Editorial Director
