Spirit Magazine - June 2013 - (Page 25)

behiNd the musiC I was flying Southwest during spring break and was drawn to your lead article [“If You Know Four Notes...,” April 2013]. I was so impressed with how Youth Orchestra LA is changing the lives of at-risk children. I was in the midst of planning the Texas Association for Symphony Orchestras’ annual conference in College Station and was able to share the story with attendees from all over the state, as well as with our outstanding speakers Aaron Dworkin, Harvey Felder (former conductor of the Tacoma Symphony Orchestra), and Bob Flanagan of Stanford University.  — e R i n K R a c h T b R ya n , T e x a s El Sistema, the model for Youth Orchestra LA, started in Venezuela and has spread to the U.S., particularly Los Angeles, where 540 kids practice harmony five days a week after school. We’ve been impressed by how quickly the idea of using orchestras to change kids catches on. And people like you are making it catch, Erin. Many thanks. Numero uNo I always start my flights by reviewing Spirit magazine. I have enjoyed The Numbers section, and all the great bits of information it provides, for years. Boy, did the dishwasher Number [April 2013] hit home. I also take home some of your recipes, although the Habanero Pickles might be a stretch for me. What really excited me about the April issue was the mention in “Your Adventure In…” of San Juan’s Numero Uno Guest House. My wife and I have stayed here many times, and in our opinion it is the best and most relaxing place to stay in the area. Keep up the great work, Southwest. — D av i D W i l l i a m s s h aW n e e , K a n s a s Thanks, David. Maybe it’s time to do a Number on the number of letters we get about The Numbers! Cross Brendan Emmett Quigley’s hard crossword puzzles are certainly that: virtually unsolvable without reference to a crossword puzzle dictionary and/or the Internet onboard. It seems they would be best when taken home and done over coffee, unless their inclusion in the section titled “Fun!” is meant as a cruel irony. Might I suggest that when printing the answers you also explain the puzzle headings? I fail to see, for example, why the March puzzle is called “Little Green Men” and April’s is “Taking a Pulse.” — R i c h a R D Fo R D e l Pa s o, T e x a s We agree, the themes of Brendan’s crosswords can be real head-scratchers—puzzles in and of themselves! Here’s a hint: Check out the longest answers of the solution. (Here’s another: With those two particular crosswords, you might need to look for similarities within the answers.)
