bogeyed the third. “OK, we just gotta settle down now,” said Eddie. And Francis did. After two rounds (both played on Thursday), he was tied for seventh, only four shots behind the leaders. Friday was scheduled to be the final day of the Open—a 36-hole marathon to crown the national champion. It was a cold, windy, rainy morning, making the weather a key character in the drama. A few days earlier, not a single spectator had followed Francis from the first tee to the first fairway. Now, as his third round began, more than 3,000 sets of eyes watched him prepare to tee off. Many of them were caddies who had finished working their rounds, his former colleagues who, in a reflection of the class struggles at the turn of the century, thrilled at the notion that one of their own was going toe-to-toe with the greats of the game. Some 10,000 spectators lined the fairway as he reached the 17th tee.
