But Francis stuck with Eddie, revealing, says Strange, “what type of man Francis was and would become.” Through nine holes, in front of a horde of onlookers unprecedented in American golf, the three men matched each other stroke for stroke. Then the unthinkable happened. Ray began to fade. Vardon began to falter. After 11 holes, Francis led by a stroke. After 12, he led by two. By the time he reached the 17th fairway, just a chip shot from his front door, he was one up on Vardon and five ahead of Ray. The Brits made a mess of the hole, but Francis struck the ball soundly and faced an 18-foot birdie putt. Eighteen feet, and the tournament would be his. The rest is immortality. Francis made the putt and eased through the final hole, beating Vardon by five strokes and Ray by six in a performance that put American golf on the front pages for the first time. One shocked British journalist wrote, “When we may go for weekend golfing trips to Jupiter and Mars, I will perhaps believe what little Ouimet did today.” Francis and Eddie were lifted onto the shoulders of the delirious crowd, who reached out toward them, as if touching a miracle. “Pass the hat for Eddie!” Francis shouted. Little Eddie would go on to win the state amateur title 14 years later. He would become a successful California businessman and generous benefactor to the game. But at that moment, riding high, grinning from ear to ear, he felt like the richest 10-year-old in town.
