As you explore your options, pay
close attention to industries that are
on the upswing, such as senior care,
as these will be in high demand in the
decades to come. According to the U.S.
Administration on Aging, 19 percent
of the population will be 65 or older by
2030, creating an increased need for
in-home care providers. This demand
is being met by companies like Right
at Home, whose services range from
cooking and light housekeeping to
home care for cancer recovery.
Seniors Helping Seniors, another
in-home care provider, takes a different approach by matching seniors
who want to provide help with other
seniors seeking help. The concept
stems from the idea that seniors can
help each other age better and that
those who give and those who receive
benefit equally. “Our franchises are a
way for people with big hearts who
WHAT SHOULD I ASK THE FRANCHISOR?
• What is the success rate of existing franchises?
• How many franchises are expected to be added each year, and where
will they be located?
• What are the traffic counts required to support a franchise?
• Besides the initial investment, what are the continued financial costs?
• What type of consumer advertising does the company recommend?
• How often does the field staff visit a franchisee’s location?
• Will the franchisor finance any of the costs?
• What type of consumer research has the franchisor conducted?
• What percentage of sales is recommended for advertising?

enjoy helping others and giving back
to their communities to do good and
make money by providing a valuable
and rapidly growing service,” says
Kiran Yocom, co-founder of Seniors
Helping Seniors. Franchise partners
often see ongoing, repeat business
due to their broad range of services
and the caring manner in which their
people operate. “Our providers and
our receivers actually become friends
because they can relate to each other,”
Yocom says. “When our franchise
partners lay their heads on their pil-
lows at night, they can feel very good
about their day.”
And when you feel good about what
you do, it seems the money follows.
Take, for example, Home Care Assistance, another leader in senior home
care. According to Jack Johnson, vice
president of franchising for Home
Care Assistance, the average Home
Care Assistance location achieves
about $1.2 million in revenue by the
third year in operation.
But that’s not the only industry on
the rise. According to the U.S. Census

With the birth of their daughter, Bill and Marina Schmidt –
corporate warriors, each with established careers – began to
question their work-life balance. Marina was traveling the
country as an HR executive, and Bill was working as an engineer.
They wanted to spend more time with their daughter and enjoy
more flexibility.
In March 2008, the Schmidts opened their Kiddie Academy
franchise in the greater Tampa area. “We love having our own
business,” says Marina. “We realized, why work hard and make money
for others? Why don’t we just do it for ourselves? And it’s worked
out well.”
The couple’s passion for the
business has enabled them to
achieve their personal, professional and financial goals.
