Baton Rouge, Louisiana JAN Baton Rouge Mardi Gras A Louisiana tradition since French settlers formed celebratory krewes in 1830, Mardi Gras-français for "Fat Tuesday"-may be most famously feted each year in decadent New Orleans, but Baton Rouge also knows a thing or two about revelry and jubilation. According to Mark Twain, "the soul of [Mardi Gras] is the romantic, not the funny and the grotesque," so Capital City's festive but more traditional celebration is probably truer in spirit than the Big Easy's famously over-the-top indulgences. The decidedly family-friendlier Baton Rouge Mardi Gras goes big with huge floats, fancy balls, abundant live music, good regional eats, and flamboyant pageantry until March 4. More than a half-dozen parades will wind through the Pelican State's capital, boasting costumes, happy canines, fancy footwork, marching bands, and eye-popping floats, while a variety of fundraising opportunities serving local organizations will abound.
